                            DESCRIPTION OF THE FIRM

 

Curtin, Murphy & O'Reilly, P.C. ("CMO") was established by former Senior Partners of Parker, Coulter, Daley & White ("Parker, Coulter"), a ninety-one year old Boston law firm.  In September of 1995, two months prior to that firm's dissolution, the principals formed CMO focusing on the defense of institutional clients and employers in workers' compensation proceedings, civil litigation, including employment practices litigation, and appellate practice.  CMO is notable for the depth of experience of its legal personnel.

                                  PRINCIPALS 

William H. Murphy

 

Mr. Murphy is a 1963 graduate of Boston College and a 1970 graduate of the New England School of Law where he was first in his class and was senior editor of the Law Journal.  He joined Parker, Coulter, Daley & White ("Parker, Coulter") in 1971.  He became a General Partner in the firm in 1980.  In 1991, he became the Manager of the fifteen-attorney Occupational Injury Department at the firm.  In April 1993, he was elected as the Managing Partner of Parker, Coulter and continued in that position until he resigned in September of 1995.  Mr. Murphy's practice has involved the litigation of industrial injury claims.  Mr. Murphy is A.V. rated by Martindale Hubbell and is a continuing MCLE lecturer on occupational injury matters.

 

Richard N. Curtin

 

Mr. Curtin is a 1966 graduate of Fairfield University and a 1969 graduate of the Boston University School of Law.  After a period of military service, he joined the Boston law firm of Murphy and Beane where he remained until 1980 when he joined Parker, Coulter.  He became a General Partner in 1990.  Mr. Curtin's practice has focused on the defense of occupational injury claims in Massachusetts and under the provisions of the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act.  During his first ten years with the firm Mr. Curtin handled all workers' compensation appeals taken to the Massachusetts Appellate Courts and to the United States Courts of Appeals for the First and Second Circuits.  He is A.V. rated by Martindale Hubbell.

 

Thomas P. O'Reilly

 

Mr. O'Reilly is a 1967 graduate of Boston College.  After a period of military service, he graduated from Boston College Law School in 1972.  He began his legal career as staff counsel to the Travelers Insurance Company in Boston.  In 1976 he joined Parker, Coulter and in 1985 became a General Partner in the firm.  Over the years, he has developed a significant practice in the defense of occupational injury claims, particularly in the area of occupational disease and toxic exposure claims both in Massachusetts and under the provisions of the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act.  He is also an experienced civil litigator in State and Federal Courts and has been Massachusetts Counsel to several national corporations on toxic exposure claims.  He was the Manager of the Asbestos Litigation Department at Parker, Coulter from 1985 through 1993 and had been the Manager of the Occupational Injury Department from 1993 until the announcement of his resignation in September of 1995.  At Parker, Coulter he was a member of the firm's Management Committee.  Mr. O'Reilly is A.V. rated by Martindale Hubbell and is a frequent MCLE lecturer on trial practice and occupational injury claims.

Linda C. Scarano, born Brighton, Massachusetts; admitted to bar, 1977, Massachusetts.  Education: Stonehill College (A.B., 1973); New England School of Law (J.D., 1976).  1978, Federal District Court, District of Massachusetts.  1986, United States Supreme Court.  Member: Plymouth County and Massachusetts Bar Associations.  Ms. Scarano has focused her practice on workers' compensation matters and is Managing Partner of the Fall River office.

 

Linda D. Oliveira, born Providence, Rhode Island; admitted to bar, 1986, Massachusetts; 1987, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and U.S. District Court, District of New Hampshire and District of Massachusetts.  Education: Southeastern Massachusetts University (B.A., cum laude, 1982); Franklin Pierce Law Center (J.D., 1986).  Phi Alpha Delta.  Member: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and American Bar Associations.  Ms. Oliveira has focused her practice on workers' compensation and civil litigation and is a partner in the Fall River office.

 

Paul M. Moretti, born Providence, Rhode Island, admitted to bar, 1988, Massachusetts 1989. U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts and U.S. Court of Appeals, First Circuit; 1994, United States Supreme Court.  Education: University of Rhode Island (B.S., 1978; M.B.A., 1980), New England School of Law (J.D., magna cum laude, 1988), Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Recipient Amos L. Taylor Service and Scholarship Award.  Editor-in-Chief, New England Law Review, 1987-1988.  New England Scholar.  Instructor, New England School of law, 1989 - 1995.  Member: Boston, Massachusetts, Federal and American Bar Associations.  Mr. Moretti has focused his practice on workers' compensation law; appellate practice; and insurance law.  He is an active practitioner at the D.I.A. Review Board, the appellate forum of the Department of Industrial Accidents, and regularly appears before the Massachusetts Appeals Court and the Supreme Judicial Court.

George D. Kelly is a 1988 graduate of Stonehill College and a 1992 graduate cum laude of New England School of Law.  Prior to attending law school he began his career as a claims representative for Aetna Life & Casualty where he handled personal injury claims. At New England School of Law he was a New England Scholar, recipient of the American Jurisprudence Award for Excellence in Tort Law, Technical Coordinator Editor for the New England Law Review.  After graduating from New England School of Law he was an Assistant District Attorney for five years in Bristol County where he prosecuted major felonies and completed numerous bench and jury trials.  After leaving the District Attorney=s Office he was staff counsel for Kemper Insurance company for five years practicing primarily in the litigation of industrial claims in Massachusetts and Rhode Island as well asbestos defense in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.  Mr. Kelly is admitted to the practice of law in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
